Eye Care for Children

Doctor Kaarthik Speaks

Eye care for children is important to ensure proper visual development and to detect and treat any vision problems early on. Regular eye exams are recommended for children, starting at 6 months of age. As children grow, their visual system is still developing, and regular eye exams can help to detect and correct any problems before they become more severe.

During an eye exam for a child, the eye doctor will check for visual acuity, or the child’s ability to see clearly, as well as assess the health of the eyes and check for any signs of eye disease or disorders. The eye doctor may also perform tests to check the child’s eye teaming, tracking, and focusing abilities, and may prescribe glasses or other vision correction if needed.

Some common vision problems in children include nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Children who have a family history of eye problems or who have other risk factors, such as premature birth or a developmental disorder, may be at a higher risk for vision problems and should be seen more frequently.

It’s also very important to protect their eyes from the sun, the best way to do that is by wearing sunglasses or a hat.

Regular eye exams, good vision habits and protection from sun’s harmful rays help to ensure that children have the visual abilities they need for learning, playing and overall development.
